On our way to Death Valley we crossed a Ghost Town and more than one time the water supply of Los Angeles. 674km travels the water from the higher parts of the state down to the city – for us simply unbelievable! We spend the night at the lake in Lone Pine.

Below 0 – but not temperature but sea level. Just after midday we reached Death Valley. First we checked in on the campground and wanted to make a little siesta because of the heat. But I just couldn’t just sit there and so we started our exploration of the park already at 2pm. I made a picture of the thermometer at 36°C and I thought: this is it.

Our ride lead us to the Artist’s Palette, a round trip with beautiful rock formations. The wind blew constantly and the temperatures climbed to 39°C. It felt like a giant hot air blower. We were simply not used to this heat and Barbara’s contacts weren’t happy as well. So we found shelter in the cool rooms of the visitor center.

After a little while we took another try. At still 39°C we enjoyed the rocky landscape and the natural bridge. And of corse we visited the lowest point of the valley: 85.5m below sea level.

At 10pm it was still 35°C so we took a ice cold camping shower. The next morning we got up at 5am to watch the sun rise from Dante’s View, where we had a great view over the valley. Finally some cooler air!
