After leaving the ferry in Haines, we spent the night next to the Highway to Yukon. At breakfast on a view point we were able to spot our first Moose crossing the river. Shortly after this we crossed the border to canada again and a bit later we entered the state of Yukon. After beautiful rivers and sparse plateaus we drove through magical forests.
180 km later we came to the next bigger village and took the chance to restock and wash. At the bakery we met two swiss, who were traveling on their bikes south and we had a great chat.
We were totally happy to find a truly beautiful spot to stay. While eating dinner, 20 meters away a beaver was building his dam.
Unfortunately hundreds of mosquitos chose our bus as a new home. Late in the evening, after several attempts of getting them all out of the car, we tried to sleep. The constant humming and biting of the mosquitos kept us awake until Barbara built a small mosquito net out of her scarf, that protected at least our heads.
On we drove on the Alaska Highway with fantastic landscape. After a short midday-hike in Kluane National Park we looked for the next sleeping place shortly before the US border. We learned and chose a place way up over the valley, where no lake or river was close by.
While driving through the day we kicked all the mosquitos out of the van, one by one, so we were able to enjoy a beautiful evening without these beasts at 30° celsius. We are already pretty much north and the sun sets long after midnight, sunrise is shortly after 3 a.m.
Again crossing the border was easy. A long drive later we had lunch while a moose cow with her two babys passed by on the other side of the lake.
Further on the Highway we really had to focus on the road. Because of climate change in some places Permafrost was melting which caused the road to sink. The Highway was full of bumps!
After a stopp in the village of North Pole and a hello to Santa, we arrived in Fairbanks.
