So the mosquitos can’t follow us, we fled to the mountains and drove up to hatcher pass. The pass is a recreational area for anchorage with many hiking and skiing trails but is also known for his gold mine. Until it’s closure around 14 tonnes of gold were found here! You can look at the buildings, or what is left of them, signs give information about the life around the mine. But the view was already worth the drive, it was breath taking!
Next we drive to Anchorage. Nick doesn’t like cities that much and is already worried he will be bored. But I already looked forward to people, shops and markets. And we found a beautiful market with music and food, where we observed the different tourists. A bit further down, beyond the railway station flows Ship Creek. With the city as a backdrop hundreds of fishermen (and women) try to make a catch. Almost an hour we walked up and down the creek and were amused by the more or less skilled fishermen.
For Nick we mad a little detour to Lake Hood. With up to 800 starting and landing float planes it can call itself the biggest water airport of the world. Many floatplanes were parked in or around the lake, whole or in parts.
In one of the outdoor-shops we finally found, what we tried to find for many days now: a perfect mosquito net! Actually it would be the mesh walls to a pavilion, but it fits perfectly under our awning. Finally we can fully enjoy the long alaskan evenings without all the bugs!
And this was already it with our city-visit. The drive along the Cook Inlet was really scenic and now we head to „Alaska’s Playground: the Kenai Peninsula.
