After the hype in Calgary vastness awaits us. Canola field after canola field and every now and then a cornfield. We tried to pass quickly all the shabby farms and leave this solitude.
Instead of taking the regular Trans-Canada-Highway we take some smaller roads a bit more north and drive to the Duck Mountain Provincial Parks where we find some forest, some beautiful lakes and bears. Unfortunately the bike trail seems to be an ATV mud trail and was only limited fun.
Further on in Riding Mountain National Park we try one of the smaller hikes. But here too fun is limited: the only thing we can see from the trail are the over 2 m high bushes to the left and right.
The city of Winnipeg gives us a little break from nature. Just in time for our city walk it starts pouring. We escape to the shopping mall and explore Winnipeg by it’s indoor trail system through out downtown.
With the van we drive down to Forks Market. In this big halls we found food, art and souvenir shops. We enjoy the vibe and enjoy coffee and cake. As soon as the rain stops we head out to the park which is typically canadian: big and well-kept.
Shortly after Winnipeg – between more canola fields – we cross the geographical middle of canada. The second half awaits, and we are curious!
